Chris West has proven himself as a leader many times throughout his tenure as a public servant as a United States Marine, Oklahoma State Trooper and as the Canadian County Sheriff. Chris West not only possesses more than a dozen FEMA certifications in National Incident Management Systems, but he has actually deployed across the state to real life incidents and mass casualty situations to assist in safety and recovery efforts.

About Sheriff Chris West

Sheriff Chris West, a fifth-generation Oklahoman and lifelong resident of Canadian County, graduated from Yukon High School in 1980. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California, and at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, before receiving an honorable discharge as a Non-Commissioned Officer in 1984.

 

After his military service, Sheriff West dedicated 28 years to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, retiring as a Captain from the Highway Patrol in 2012. During his tenure, he moved steadily into leadership, from Traffic Trooper, to Academy training staff, Field Supervisor, and then Troop Commander.

 

In 2013, West was appointed Canadian County Undersheriff and later elected Sheriff in 2017 and re-elected in 2020. With over 38 years in law enforcement, he has completed over 3600 hours of training and holds advanced certifications including from the FBI National Academy and FEMA.

Sheriff West is actively involved in law enforcement organizations, serving on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Sheriff's Association and the National Sheriffs’ Association, where he holds leadership positions. He has been recognized for his contributions, including being named the Oklahoma Sheriffs’ Association's 2019 "Sheriff of the Year."

 

Sheriff West earned an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Redlands Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Management & Leadership from Southern Nazarene University. He also participated in the JINSA Homeland Security/Counter Terrorism training program in Israel as part of a U.S. Law Enforcement delegation.

 

He and his wife, Kelly, a Registered Nurse, have been married for 40 years and reside in Mustang. They are active members of Council Road Baptist Church and have two adult, married sons and several grandchildren. Sheriff West is a Constitutional conservative committed to protecting the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness; the Rule of Law; and the Due Process rights of every individual.
